Today marks a full 12 months given that India went into lockdown after rising COVID-19 cases across the country. Through the year, we’ve viewed cow piss ingesting parties, a godman/tycoon get away with claiming his concoction would result in “100% recuperation from coronavirus infection inside 7 days”, watched thousands and thousands of migrants stroll domestic even as the other side of India baked bread and enjoyed the clear skies, questioned who exactly the PM Cares about, and watched humans shout “Go Corona Go!” to ward off the virus.

Still, alas, the virus determined to stay—and so did the memes. In a year spent looking a lot at our phones, it seemed like memes made us all journey this one giggle wave together. Sure, they made us laugh thru 2020 and now, 2021, however, memes have also highlighted our cultural moments in a way that nothing else could.

So as we bear in mind the anniversary of the event that went on to make our lives as unreal as the “everything is cake” meme, we document the memes that not simply made us ROFL between Zoom calls, on-line classes, and WFH breaks however additionally stood in for the anxieties and insecurities that the Satan’s year came with.

Here are some of the best memes of the worst year so far.

These were some of the memes the list is endless. We hope you had a good laugh. Stay tuned for the next time who knows we might experience another lockdown.

June Almeida, daughter of a Scottish bus driver was the woman who discovered the first human coronavirus in 1964 at the age of 35 Years. She was an internationally known virologist who invented new techniques for viral imaging and diagnosis.
In 1964, she and her colleague spotted a new kind of virus, much like the sun’s corona but it was rejected by a peer-reviewed journal.

The photos she had captured were ignored by the referees as “just poor pictures of influenza virus particles” of a virus surrounded by what seemed to be a halo or a crown. Little did they suspect, however, that the virus they were studying would wreak havoc on the planet just over 50 years down the line.

About June Almeida –

June Dalziel Almeida (5 October 1930-1 December 2007) was a Scottish virologist, a pioneer in the area of virus imaging, classification, and diagnosis. Almeida was recruited to London in 1964 by St Thomas’s Hospital Medical School.

She left school in 1947 when Almeida was 16, and despite her academic ability at that time she did not have the financial resources to attend university.
Through 1964, based on her publications of her work conducted at the Ontario Cancer Institute and at St Thomas on electron micrographic antibody studies, Almeida had received her Doctor of Science (Sc.D.)

In 1985 Almeida retired from virology, but remained interested and curious. She became a yoga teacher, learned how to restore fine china, and cultivated a keen eye for antiquities that she sometimes searched for with her second husband Phillip Gardner, also a retired virologist.

Before her death at the age of 77 in 2007, Almeida returned to St. Thomas as a consultant and helped to publish some of the first high-quality photographs of HIV, the AIDS-causing virus.

Other discoveries by June Almeida

The system used by Almeida also helped to classify common cold viruses which could not be conventionally cultivated.

Using immune electron microscopy she also found that the hepatitis B virus has two distinct components, one on the surface and one on the inside.
This helped the scientific community understand that the surface component of antibodies had a protective effect against infection, an understanding which helped to develop a disease vaccine. Her publications were awarded a Doctor of Science (D.Sc) by the 1970’s.

Almeida is credited with teaching immune electron microscopy technique to Dr. A.Z. Kapikian of the National Institutes of Health of the U.S. government, who used it to classify the norovirus that triggers ‘winter vomiting disease’ outbreaks.

In 1979 she co-authored a World Health Organization manual for rapid laboratory viral diagnosis. Today, most of the articles and textbooks analyzing virology include her virus electron micrographs.

June Almeida died in 2007, when she was 77 years old.

Now, 13 years after her death, she finally gets the recognition that she deserves as a visionary whose research has accelerated awareness of the virus that is spreading all over the world at present.

As of 9th April, there are more than 1,536,000 coronavirus cases and 89,877 deaths all over the world. But today we are not going to talk about the loss the whole world is suffering from, we will tell you positive impacts on the environment due to the coronavirus lockdown. Out of the world’s 30 most polluted cities, 21 cities are from India, but according to The Weather Channel, the air pollution levels have started to drop noticeably in India and other parts of the world amid coronavirus lockdown.

As the Indian government asked its citizens to stay home and practice social distancing, all markets, factories, and even worship places are now closed, most of the public transport has suspended and construction work halted. So far, India has more than 6,237 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 180 deaths. We know that human life had largely affected as millions of us are locked up indoors. But on the other hand, nature and the natural environment are healing at their best. From liberated wildlife to cleaner air and water too, the lockdown across the globe had a number of positive effects on the environment. Due to the lockdown, the harmful air pollutants nitrogen dioxide and PM 2.5, emitted from vehicles and factories had been greatly reduced.

Let’s have a look at some of the remarkable impacts on the environment due to coronavirus lockdown:

  • CLEANER AIR

Cleaner air is one of the greatest positive effects of the lockdowns on the environment. With industrial and automobile work close down, pollution levels across India and other countries have witnessed a drastic drop. India is in the last week of lockdown and a few days ago, Jalandhar a city of Punjab saw the most drastic effect of air pollution reduction. The residents of the city claim to wake up to an unimaginable view of the snow-capped Himalayan range. Different cities across the globe have seen pollution levels fall as people have reduced the use of vehicles, factories and spending more time at home. According to a Stanford University scientist, 77,000 lives in China have been saved due to the reducing pollution levels amid coronavirus lockdown.

  • CLEARER WATER

As industrial units are closed and there is no pollutant emission in the river, the water in Yamuna River looked cleaner than before. According to a devotee, “Within 9 days of the lockdown, Yamuna was clean, this is also signal that one should not play with the environment.” He further said that the government should stop the disposing of pollutants in the river bodies as these pollutants are also like a virus which makes the river body dead. Also, the water quality of famous winding canals, Venice, Italy has improved greatly.

  • WILDLIFE

A few days ago, social media was bombarded with different footage of wild animals exploring the empty streets of the cities. As humans retreat into their homes, these animals started roaming around the streets. The head of Chile’s agricultural and livestock service, Marcelo Giagnoni said: “This is the habitat they once had and that we’ve taken away from them.” Recently, some migratory birds were also seen returning around the Yamuna river and so was the marine life.

  • CLIMATE CHANGE

CO2 is the most important long-lived reason for climate change, and the main contribution to it is vehicles and industries. And obviously the decrease in the number of vehicles has hugely impacted climate change. The carbon emissions have leveled down as the transport and electricity industries are shut down, which has positively impacted the climate change in the environment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday shared a video of late Atal Bihari Vajpayee reciting his poem ‘aao, phir se diya jalaein’.

In a video message on 3rd April Friday, the prime minister had urged the citizens to light diyas and candles during a nine-minute blackout at 9 pm on 5th April. To unite the people in the fight against coronavirus, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed people to lit candles in their home’s balconies.

Today he shared a video of late Atal Bihari Vajpayee reciting his poem “aao, phir se diya jalaein”.

“Aao, phir se diya jalaein (come let’s light the lamp),” tweeted PM Modi while sharing the video. In the brief clip, the former prime minister is seen reciting the poem on a stage.

“Aao phir se diya jalayen” is an iconic poem by the former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Amid coronavirus lockdown, a voluntary nine-minute blackout to present the country’s “collective resolve” to defeat the pandemic, can act as a mental reliever for many. The PM had urged people to light diyas, candles or use phone flashlights or torch to show voluntary support. He also expressed gratitude towards people for supporting the Janata Curfew on March 22 and said that it was a symbol of unity of 130 crore Indians in the fight against the coronavirus.

Meanwhile, according to the latest data by the Indian Union Health Ministry, the number of confirmed cases stood at 2,902, and 69 people have died across India due to the COVID-19 infection. To implement social distancing, India is under a countrywide lockdown till 14 April, only essential services are allowed to function.

According to the UN agency WFP: Panic buying could impact global food supply chain

In a new report, the World Food Programme (WFP) analysis of the economic and food security implications of the pandemic could have a potential impact on the world’s poorest people.

According to WFP- “the rapidly growing novel coronavirus pandemic is so far having little impact on the global food supply chain, but that could change for the worse – and soon – if anxiety-driven panic by major food importers takes hold”.

In the report, WFP Senior Spokesperson Elizabeth Byrs said- “Disruptions are so far minimal; the food supply is adequate, and markets are relatively stable.” “But we may soon expect to see disruptions in food supply chains,” she added.

The Indian Government has recently launched its official coronavirus tracking app that will help people track COVID-19 infections. The name of the app is Aarogya Setu which is a Sanskrit word, which means ‘A bridge of health’. The app was developed by the National Informatics Centre and later came under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

So how does the app will track coronavirus infection?

The app will help to determine if you have been in close proximity to a COVID-19 infected person or not, by using your smartphone’s GPS system and Bluetooth. It verifies if you are at risk by scanning through a database of known cases across India, and via location. The app works on the encrypted database and uses your location to identify the area you roam around near the infected areas. Your mobile phone needs an activated Bluetooth to found if you have been within six feet from the infected person or not.

The app supports 11 languages and has a dedicated a chatbot that asks you a series of questions to find out if you have any symptoms of COVID-19. It also informs you about the various facilities and updates from the Indian health ministry along with helpline numbers nationwide and state-wise. After downloading the app from Google Play Store you’ll be asked to select a language and allow permission to use Bluetooth and GPS. After that, you need to register in the app with your mobile number, to authenticate your access, and then some personal data such as name, gender, age, profession are collected.  Once you are in the app, it will scan your location and share your data in case you have been in close contact with an infected person who was tested positive, with the respective authorities registered with the app.

By launching the app, the government wants to create self-awareness among the citizens with relevant information about the infection and seeks to limit the spread of the COVID-19 cases in India. According to the health ministry of India, at present, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has surged to 1,965, including 50 deaths.
