India celebrates National Science Day every year to consider the discovery of the “Raman effect” by the famous Indian physicist Sir C. V. Raman on 28 February 1928. Born on November 07, 1888, Dr. CV Raman was an Indian physicist born in the former Madras Province in India, who carried out innovative work in the field of light scattering known as “Raman effect”. His discovery shows that -when light passes through a transparent material, some of the deflected light changes wavelength and amplitude. Dr. CV Raman formally confirmed on February 28, 1928, that he has invented the ‘Raman Effect.’
In 1930, he became the first person in Asia to obtain the Nobel Prize award for achievements in science. In 1954, he was also honoured with India’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna. He also researched the spectrum nature of steel, fundamental issues of steel dynamics, properties of diamonds and the optical behaviour of many pigmented materials. He was the first to determine the harmonic nature of the tabla and mridangam.
National Science Day is an occasion to salute the talent and tenacity of our scientists. Their innovative zeal and pioneering research has helped India and the world. May Indian science continue to thrive and may our young minds develop even greater curiosity towards science.

It was declared in 1986 by the National Council for Science & Technology Communication and Indian Government to celebrate National Science Day on February 28. The day is now celebrated all over the country in all the educational institutions including other academic, medical, scientific, and research institutions. The celebration also includes different science exhibitions, movies, and public TV, radio speeches, debates, quiz competitions, lectures, science model presentations and many more science-related activities. Basically the day has its significance to widely spread a message about the Importance of science used in the daily life of the people.
The theme of the year 2019 was “Science for the People and the People for Science” and this year the theme is “Women in Science” for 2020.
This year, the theme aims to value the contribution of women in the field of science & technology. The day will be celebrated on February 28 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. The President of India Ram Nath Kovind will distribute prizes to women scientists who have made extraordinary contributions in the field of science.
