Abhijit Banerjee and Wife Esther Duflo Receives Nobel Prize

Indian-American economist Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee, together with his wife Esther Duflo and colleague Michael Kremer, received the Nobel Prize in Economics in Sweden (the 2019 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel) For their “ experimental approach to alleviating global poverty”.

They were awarded medals at the ceremony and will also share the prize money of nine million Swedish krona (Rs 6.7 crore) among themselves.

Abhijit Bannerjee looked so elegant in cream dhoti with golden border and her wife Duflo wore blue saree, red blouse, and red bindi and their friend Nobel Laureate Michael Kremer wore a black suit.

Abhijit Banerjee was born on 21 February 1961 in Mumbai, India.  He completed his education from South Point High School, a renowned educational institution in Kolkata. After his education, he took admission to the University of Calcutta in Presidency College, Kolkata where he completed his B.Sc.(H) degree in economics in 1981.

He completed his M.A. later in economics at the University of Jawaharlal Nehru, Delhi, 1983.

Esther Duflo was born on 25 October 1972 in Paris, France. She completed her education in history and economics at École Normale Supérieure in 1994 and received a master’s degree from the Paris School of Economics.

She is a National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) research associate, a board member of the Bureau for Research and Economic Analysis of Development (BREAD), and director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research’s development economics program and she is the second woman to win the Nobel Economics Prize in its 50-year existence.
