Growing digitalization efforts combined with low data prices enabled about 668.2 million people to use the internet actively across India. Of these, about 400 million are active social media users. YouTube and Facebook accounted for the largest penetration, at 82 percent and 76 percent respectively as of January 2020 and TikTok for about 39 percent with a high growth rate in last quarter.
Social media platforms like YouTube and TikTok provides many young crowd and other professionals an online video platform to create content, show the creativity, spread information to its users. Both of these social media platforms has been a career for many people and developed some young entrepreneurs in the country. However, there are some major differences in their contents in some areas and also difference in target audience till certain point.
YouTube provide its users the benefit to access video of any topic of no defined length. It can be education, motivation, music, movies, short films, documentaries, tutorials, vlogging, technical, scientific, entertainment, etc. You name it, it is there. With guidelines Whereas, TikTok content is mostly fun and entertainment with a limited video length say not more than a minute with no standard guidelines and copyright claim which is the reason why there is a enormous rise of cringe content in TikTok.
Lately there has been a rivalry trend observed between some Indian YouTuber’s and TikToker’s after You Tuber Elvish Yadav roasted some TikTokers on their cringe content and body shame. Following which, TikTok star Aamir Siddiqi shared a video on Instagram where he came up with some statements just for sake of reply. By saying “No real content”, “There is no unity in youtubers” and some comparison between both the platforms. This initiated the YouTube Vs TikTok feud on social media with hash tags.
After the hash tag trend going viral, Initiated YouTuber CarryMinati to make a reply video in which he roasted out Tiktokers with his roasting skits and dank sense of humor. It took no time for video to go viral engaging high number of audience. CarryMinati broke many YouTube records on 8 May 2020:-
- The fastest 2 million likes
- Fastest 2 Million Subscriber gain in the world
- Most liked video all over the India on his video YouTube vs TikTok video with nearly 7 Million likes.
Hash tag soon became a meme format and triggered an epic meme fest on Twitter.

As of today there are more than 119 million Tiktok users in the country and the number is growing at a rapid pace, although there are some creative content creators on TikTok, the app is highly stuffed with the content which would disgust many with the cringe content. As the majority of population which creates video on tiktok does not take conscious responsibility towards avoiding exploitation of cultural and social environment, many times in past tiktok has been charged for violating the content, however still thousand of videos go viral.
Looking at all such events it is our call to realize which platform would be contributing and which could be exploiting. But may be due to lack of awareness among people and with such growth in exploiting content of TikTok and usage, Such influence can cause a serious behavioral and cultural shifts in upcoming generation
Its ones call to use his data wisely, find the content and platform to contribute in a more intellectual manner.
