Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” has recently achieved an extraordinary milestone, surpassing $1 billion at the international box office. This achievement is noteworthy because it makes “Inside Out 2” the first animated film ever to reach this landmark from international sales alone. 

While numerous films have surpassed $1 billion globally, only a handful have done so solely from overseas markets. Thus, “Inside Out 2” stands out as a trailblazer in the animation genre.

The Film’s Global Appeal

“Inside Out 2” has demonstrated impressive global appeal, earning a remarkable $1.649 billion worldwide. To break this down further, $1.002 billion of this total comes from international markets, while $646.3 million is attributed to domestic sales. 

This indicates that the film has resonated widely, appealing to audiences across various regions. Notably, Mexico has contributed $102.2 million to the film’s international gross. In addition, Brazil, the U.K., France, and Korea have also played significant roles, each showing strong support for the film.

Disney’s impressive summer continues, as evidenced by the success of “Inside Out 2.” Moreover, the studio has enjoyed substantial gains with another major release: “Deadpool & Wolverine.” This Marvel sequel has garnered $634.1 million from international markets, proving its broad appeal despite its R rating, which restricts its audience to those aged 18 and over. 

With a global total of $1.21 billion, “Deadpool & Wolverine” is now the eighth-highest-grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe film. Furthermore, it is expected to climb the rankings, potentially surpassing “Iron Man 3” in the near future.

Other Notable Releases

In addition to these blockbuster hits, Disney’s “Alien: Romulus” has added $41.6 million internationally over the weekend, pushing its worldwide total to $225.4 million. Interestingly, “Alien: Romulus” has found significant success in China, where it has accumulated $73.3 million. This demonstrates that even amid the post-pandemic challenges, Hollywood films can still capture substantial international audiences.

Struggles with New Releases

Despite these successes, not all new releases have fared well. For instance, Zoe Kravitz’s directorial debut, “Blink Twice,” struggled to make a significant impact. The psychological thriller earned $6.7 million from 73 international markets and $7.2 million domestically, bringing its global total to $14 million. 

Considering the film’s production budget of $20 million before reshoots, this performance has fallen short of expectations. Similarly, Lionsgate’s “The Crow” reboot did not perform well, earning only $3.8 million from international markets and $4.6 million domestically. With a global total of $8.5 million, the film’s performance has been particularly disappointing, given its $50 million production cost.

“Inside Out 2” has set a new standard for animated films, proving that they can achieve remarkable international success. Disney’s strong performance this summer, highlighted by the successes of both “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine,” underscores the studio’s continued dominance in the global box office.

 As the film industry continues to evolve in the post-pandemic era, these achievements illustrate the enduring appeal of animated and superhero films to audiences around the world.
