Yesterday’s cardiac Euro 2024 crash saw France come out on top over Portugal, 1-0, in a make-or-break quarter-final clash at Stade de France. The differentiating factor between these two sides was a first-half penalty goal by Kylian Mbappé, sending the French supporters into euphoria and a semi-final against either Belgium or Italy.
The Game Starts with a Cautious Opening; Early Bookings
The work of the defensive line varied under the direction of Pepe’s always-alert leadership for Portugal. France, on the other hand, made all its efforts through Mbappé and Karim Benzema up front.
The game really sparked into life when Portugal’s João Moutinho was shown a yellow card in the 12th minute for a cynical foul on Paul Pogba as the French were entering a very promising attack. That set the tone for a very nervy first half in which both teams found it hard to produce clear goal chances.
The turning point of this Euro 2024 game took place in the 33rd minute. A very awkward challenge by Ruben Dias on a box-bound Mbappé saw him take a tumble. After a brief VAR check, the referee gave a penalty to France. Mbappé himself converted the spot-kick coolly, sending Rui Patrício the wrong way in the Portuguese goal.
Portugal Pushes for an Equalizer
Portugal responded well to going behind. Bernardo Silva combined with João Félix and Rafael Leão well in the attack that seemed to be asking questions of the French backline. They really should have leveled it in the 42nd minute when João Félix was put through on goal, but Hugo Lloris made a great stop to deny the Portuguese the equalizer.
Second Half Frustrations and Great Defense
The last 45 minutes was just identical with the first, and Portugal laid siege yet again. While heavily marked throughout, this was arguably a hard game for Cristiano Ronaldo to impose himself on, by usual standards. Bernardo Silva was replaced after taking a yellow card that he pocketed in the 67th minute over a frustrating challenge on Jules Koundé—another needless attack-interrupter for Portugal.
Theirs was to defend the lead, experience from veteran defender Raphaël Varane marshaling the backline and N’Golo Kanté with his work rate over every inch of that Portuguese attack. A late free-kick for Portugal in the 88th minute, taken by Bruno Fernandes, caused a little bit of nervousness in the French penalty area, although it sailed harmlessly over the bar.
The French celebrated then after the final whistle as they had won their match against the Portuguese. Portugal got to let go behind a respectful effort of a number of players with several opportunities.
Mbappé’s Brilliance and Portugal’s Missed Chances
Mbappe more or less carried France to their victory, for his run gave the referee no alternative but to award the penalty, and his ability to convert and finish from the spot made the difference. Portugal displayed moments of attacking prowess, but just lacked that bit of clinical finishing to derail a very determined French defense.
What’s Next: France and Portugal
In the other semifinal of Euro 2024, France faces the winner of tonight’s Belgium-Italy match. It should be a cracker if they do set it up. Portugal, meanwhile, will head home but—although disappointed—take solace in their efforts over the course of the tournament. They will now turn their focus to qualifying for the next World Cup.
