The Paris Olympics 2024 kicked off with a dazzling opening ceremony on July 26, held uniquely at the heart of the iconic River Seine. This groundbreaking event, the first-ever Olympics opening ceremony held outside of a stadium, showcased an array of spectacular performances by international and local artists.

Lady Gaga’s Mesmerizing Performance

Renowned American pop star Lady Gaga was one of the highlights of the evening. Known for her extraordinary stage presence and vocal prowess, Gaga captivated the audience with a special rendition of the classic French song “Mon truc en plumes,” originally sung by Zizi Jeanmaire in 1962. 

Her performance, which took place during the highly anticipated Parade of Nations, lived up to the immense hype surrounding it. Fans, even those watching from nearby balconies, were left in awe of her talent and charisma.

Lady Gaga’s presence at the ceremony was not just a musical highlight but also a historic moment, as she performed at an open-air venue specially built along the River Seine.

Gojira’s Powerful Performance at the Conciergerie

Adding to the evening’s excitement, French metal band Gojira delivered a powerful performance at the Conciergerie, a site rich in history as the former residence of French kings and a prison during the French Revolution. 

Comprising Joe Duplantier, Mario Duplantier, Christian Andreu, and Jean-Michel Labadie, Gojira is known for their progressive and groove metal sound. 

Their performance, accompanied by opera singer Marina Viotti, was a remarkable blend of musical genres, showcasing their Grammy-nominated talent against a backdrop of historical significance.

Aya Nakamura’s Striking Performance on the Pont des Arts

French Malian singer Aya Nakamura added to the evening’s diverse musical lineup with a striking performance on the Pont des Arts. Dressed in a stunning gold feathery outfit, Nakamura strutted down a golden carpet and performed her hit songs “Pookie” and “Djadja,” accompanied by choristers from the French Army and members of the French Republican Guard orchestra. 

Her vibrant performance was a testament to her star power and added a contemporary flair to the evening.

Emotional Renditions by Axelle Saint-Cirel and Philippe Katerine

Mezzo-soprano Axelle Saint-Cirel delivered a moving rendition of the French national anthem, “La Marseillaise,” capturing the spirit and pride of the occasion. Another memorable performance came from French singer and actor Philippe Katerine, who sang “Nu” (“Naked”). 

Katerine, known for his unique style, appeared painted in powdery blue and adorned with leaves and flowers, channeling Dionysus, the Greek god of wine and festivity. 

His performance, highlighting the absurdity of violence, was a creative and thought-provoking addition to the Paris Olympics opening ceremony.

A Spectacle of Light and Music

The ceremony also featured a stunning visual display with a glittering metal horse and an armored horsewoman, Floriane Issert, symbolizing the Olympic spirit and Sequana, the nymph of the Seine River. 

This captivating spectacle, combined with vibrant musical performances and colorful smoke plumes, created a joyful and memorable atmosphere at the Paris Olympics despite the rainy weather.

As each boat floated by the Pont d’Arcole, the audience, both in-person and around the world, cheered enthusiastically. Groups of people waved from windows, and athletes danced and celebrated with lively music, showcasing the unity and excitement of the global sporting event. 

The clear ponchos worn by athletes highlighted the spirit of togetherness, transcending national boundaries.
