Chandrayaan-2 Successfully Entered The Lunar Orbit Today

After completing nearly 30 days of journey in space, Chandrayaan-2 successfully entered the lunar orbit today. According to an ISRO official, the monitoring of Chandrayaan-2 was round-the-clock and officials were anxious to see that the spacecraft was on course to the moon.

The Lunar Orbit Insertion (LOI) maneuver was completed successfully today (August 20, 2019) at 0902 hrs IST as planned, using the onboard propulsion system. The duration of the maneuver was 1738 seconds and the orbit achieved is 114 km x 18072 km.

Addressing the media, ISRO Chairman K Sivan said that the mission had achieved a milestone. “Chandrayaan-2 mission crossed a major milestone today, the precise lunar orbit insertion maneuver was carried out at 9 am for about 30 minutes, and Chandrayaan 2 was precisely inserted in the defined orbit,” he said.

The health of the spacecraft is being continuously monitored from the Mission Operations Complex (MOX) at ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) in Bengaluru with support from Indian Deep Space Network (IDSN) antennas at Bylalu, near Bengaluru.

The next Lunar bound orbit maneuver is scheduled on Wednesday between 12.30 PM and 1.30 PM, ISRO said.
