1. Johnny Gaddaar (2007)

A neo-noir thriller film written and directed by Sriram Raghavan, Johnny Gaddaar is an elegantly written and performed crime thriller story showing greed and betrayal.  Though the film received critical acclaim, it went on to be a ‘sleeper hit’ of 2007. A ‘sleeper hit’ is a film, that takes time before becoming a big success due to its little promotion or lack of a successful launch.

2. No Smoking (2007)

Written and directed by Anurag Kashyap, No Smoking is a 2007 Indian neo-noir psychological thriller film follows a self-obsessed, narcissist chain smoker who agrees to quit his habit to save his marriage but is caught in a complex game by the man who guarantees he will make him quit. The film did not perform well at the box office as the unusual storyline comprising elements of reality, horror, surrealism, dark humour, and fantasy was frowned upon by Indian audiences.
Later the film received positive reviews and was played at several film festivals in India and China, receiving unanimous applause & honor, as well as winning a number of awards.

3. Ek Hasina Thi (2004)

Another masterpiece from Sriram Raghavan, Ek Hasina Thi is a perfect drama-suspense thriller with an amazing storyline and solid acting. The perfect love story in the movie takes a huge turn when the woman was found guilty of underworld crimes. The film is usually considered one of the finest performances in the career of director Sriram Raghavan, actress Urmila, and actor Saif Ali Khan.

4. UGLY (2013)

Written and directed by Anurag Kashyap, the story of the movie revolves around the investigation of the kidnapping of a 10-year-old girl. As the story unfolds, the real emotions of the characters related to the kidnapped girl, are revealed. Ronit Roy as Shoumik Bose acted brilliantly in the movie.

5. Manorama Six Feet Under (2007)

Manorama Six Feet Under is one well-executed Bollywood thriller film follows an amateur detective in a small town from Rajasthan who finds himself caught in the middle of a complicated web of trickery, lies, and murder. Starring Abhay Deol, Raima Sen and Gul Panag in the lead roles, the film is both intelligent and exciting.

6. Paanch (2003)

Paanch is considered one of the best movies directed by Anurag Kashyap. The film is loosely based on the 1976 Joshi-Abhyankar serial murders in Pune. The film never got a theatrical release as it was rejected by the Central Board of Film Certification due to its violence, bad language and the picture of drug abuse. After many cuts and editing, the film was cleared in 2003, but could not be released as the producer faced some problems. Later the film was released in several film festivals.

Starring Kay Kay Menon, Aditya Srivastava, Vijay Maurya, and Joy Fernandes, the story revolves around five friends who are struggling musicians trapped in an alcohol and hashish haze and in their nervousness, they steal and kill. You can watch the film on YouTube.
