Air India Flight Crashes Seconds After Takeoff from Ahmedabad

In a deeply tragic air disaster, on the afternoon of 12 June 2025, Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner traveling from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed shortly after take-off. The country has been put into mourning as well as the world, when it was reported that 241 lives were lost and only one miraculous survivor amongst the 242 people on the flight.

What Happened? 

The ill-fated aircraft took off from runway 23 at 13:38 pm local time. According to videos and official statements, the aircraft was unable to gain altitude and reached an altitude of only 625 feet and a maximum ground speed of 174 knots (322 km/hr) before making a rapid and sharp descent.

At 32 seconds after take-off, the aircraft crashed into a residential area, striking a hostel for medical students that was attached to the local medical college. The plane then exploded upon impact, as video visuals depicted a thick column of smoke and a big explosion.

Casualties and Survivors

Among the 242 individuals on board were:

  • 169 Indian nationals

  • 53 British nationals

  • 1 Canadian

  • 7 Portuguese nationals

  • Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani

Air India has said that only one passenger, sitting at seat 11A, survived the crash, and was seen walking away from the location with injuries to his chest and face. In a statement to authorities, the survivor gave an account that: 

“Thirty seconds after take-off, there was a loud noise, then the plane crashed.” 

Sadly, five students died when a hostel was struck by the aircraft, and many others were critically injured.

Initial Findings

From first reports:

  1. The pilot sent a mayday after takeoff.
  2. The aircraft appeared to be struggling for lift and was flying at a low height.
  3. No further communication was heard after the initial mayday.
  4. This was additional detailed by video, which records the catastrophic climb and eventual crash.

Response and Reactions

The Indian government and leaders across the world have reacted quickly and sorrowfully. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said it was “heartbreaking beyond words” and said he has talked with ministers and emergency responders frequently.

Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said all aviation and emergency responders are on alert, and that rapid rescues have begun.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also reacted to the news, given that British nationals were on board, and called the incident “devastating.”

Emergency and Support Measures

  1. More than 25 ambulances and numerous emergency response units have been dispatched to the crash site.
  2. The medical corps of the Indian Army has, alongside police and fire services, also been deployed to the incident scene.
  3. Air India has set up an emergency helpline: 1800 5691 444 and a support center for affected families.
  4. Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, the operator of Ahmedabad Airport, has also offered condolences and assistance.

Corporate and Airline Actions

Tata Group chairman N. Chandrasekaran, as the parent company of Air India, released the following statement:

“With profound sorrow, I confirm that Air India Flight 171 was involved in a tragic accident today. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of all those affected by this devastating event. We are doing everything in our power to assist the emergency response teams and support those impacted.”

Investigation Underway

The cause of the crash has not yet been determined, however, indications are pointing towards a mechanical/technical failure during takeoff. The Ministry of Civil Aviation will continue to monitor, as a formal investigation has commenced.
