Theirs was to defend the lead, experience from veteran defender Raphaël Varane marshaling the backline and N’Golo Kanté with his work rate over every inch of that Portuguese attack. A late free-kick for Portugal in the 88th minute, taken by Bruno Fernandes, caused a little bit of nervousness in the French penalty area, although it sailed harmlessly over the bar.

The French celebrated then after the final whistle as they had won their match against the Portuguese. Portugal got to let go behind a respectful effort of a number of players with several opportunities.

Mbappe more or less carried France to their victory, for his run gave the referee no alternative but to award the penalty, and his ability to convert and finish from the spot made the difference.
